Present: Rebecca Jacobs (Employers Resource Association, Ohio), Kevin Vonder Lippe (Catapult, North Carolina), and Ken Kawamoto (Hawaii Employers Council, Hawaii)
Topics:
  • Increased union activity in your region? Union activity dried up in NC in the past, and there is not much activity at all. There has not been an increase in Hawaii. There has been a noticeable increase in activity in the Ohio/Kentucky area.
  • Non-union awareness best practices. We discussed how partnering with HR business consultants and emphasizing good HR practices helps to maintain union-free workplaces. Also briefly mentioned adult learning challenges and how we get the messages in the union awareness training to stick.
  • How we keep apprised of developments especially from the NLRB. In addition to legal briefs and subscriptions to law firm newsletters, relying on law firm members for updates and information is helpful.
  • Dealing with legal advice requests. Catapult has a contract with an outside law firm to provide prepaid legal services to members, capped at 5 hours per member. It was reported that this has been viewed as a worthwhile investment.
  • Cadence of sending labor/employee relations substantive updates to members: newsletters on a monthly or weekly basis depending on the association. Also mentioned legal alerts when appropriate given nature of development.
  • Using the discussion forum: it was discussed that there appears to be some friction in getting into the discussion forum on the basis of passwords not working or not easily reset-able. Also, it was mentioned about having more reminders of the upcoming networking calls.
